In partnership with

SaaS Strategists,
Last week I asked you to choose what type of content you would like to see more of.
The results are in, and they aren’t so helpful. 😆

As you can see, you would like to see a bit of everything.
So a bit of everything is what I will provide.
You can expect a mix of full product breakdowns, exclusive interviews with founders as well as shorter but actionable strategies.
I appreciate your help!
That being said, this issue is going to be on the shorter side, highlighting one strategy that I’m sure you’re already well familiar with.
Let’s dive right in 👇

The “Year in Review” Strategy
Reading time: 3 minutes
Be honest.
How fast have you clicked on one of these:
Youtube Rewind?
”Cool, let’s refresh my memory!”.
Asana Year in Review?
“Oh wow, let’s see how productive I was!”
Spotify Wrapped?
“Just don’t put T Swift in my top 5, Just don’t put T Swift in my top 5, Just don’t put T Swift in my top 5”.
So what do these strategies have in common?
At the end of the year, they all present your stats and achievements from the past 12 months.
They also tend to spark curiosity and their main intent is to achieve the virality effect.
We all get it.
You want to brag about how you’re in the top 1% of Metallica listeners.
But all of them do it in a really engaging and unique way.
For example:
Spotify determines your listening personality.
They spark that OMG, WTF, LOL effect by showcasing the stats you didn’t know they’re tracking, paired with stunning visuals, which creates virality and makes you want to share your Wrapped with others.

Spotify Wrapped listening personality
Todoist displays how you rank against all other users of the platform.
They also showcase how many tasks you’ve crushed and what was your average daily / weekly / monthly output.

Todoist ranking
Asana shows your top collaborator.
They also help you prepare for the next year having these stats in mind, in order to prepare for your most productive month in advance.

Asana Year in Review
All of these stats spark an emotion inside us and make us feel good about ourselves.
Sometimes even a bit nostalgic.
Just a simple “Your Wrapped is here” is such a powerful message.
Immediately spikes your dopamine levels and makes you curious to see how did you spend your year.
So naturally, you click.

“Your Wrapped is here”
How to apply it to your SaaS?
First thing that you have to understand if you want to apply this strategy is to think outside of the box.
Don’t just gather boring data we’re all used to and present it on a fancy UI.
Sure, that works, but try to spice it up a bit.
I always like to take Spotify as an example since they do it so well, topping themselves every year and showing you such interesting data you didn’t even know they were tracking.

Here are a few examples:
For sales tools
Thinking inside the box:
Best Agent
Deals closed
Deals fell through
Average deal close time
Longest deal in the pipeline
Thinking outside of the box:
Follow up on these?
Lead to deal ratio on a monthly basis, showcasing the salesperson who had the most deals closed on top of every chart.
For productivity apps
Thinking inside the box:
Tasks completed
Task that took the longest
Average amount of tasks per day
Thinking outside of the box:
Most productive month
You’re in top % of users based on productivity
For collaboration apps
Thinking inside the box:
Team members who joined
Most productive team member
Who’s the biggest messsenger
Thinking outside of the box:
Task most people worked on
Task least people worked on
A screen that compares the efficiency between those 2

Under the hood, a year-in-review is just a more sophisticated version of a well-known strategy:
ROI Showcasing.
Secretly showing you the ROI you gained by using a specific product or a platform and making sure you’ll stay for another year since - why not see how you’ve progressed?
This just shows that DATA is the new gold.
But without knowing how to make sense of it, you’re just digging in the dark.
